The debut CD recording of the Schola Cantorum of St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral.

Inspired by 800 years of sacred music and two millennia of Catholic worship, With Angels and Archangels presents some of the very best choral music sung at St Mary’s Cathedral.

The eight versatile young singers of the Schola Cantorum bring a fresh and distinctive sound to the music on the disc. Their singing tells the story not only of the vibrant musical life of St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, but also of an evolving tradition of choral singing in the Catholic Church. The album includes music by Renaissance masters Victoria and Palestrina, Lotti, Rheinberger, Duruflé, James MacMillan, and Michael Ferguson.

Each of the pieces in the CD was composed in a specific place, often for use within a specific liturgy, and was shaped by the compositional thinking and priorities of the time. At its core, though, With Angels and Archangels speaks of Catholic faith, and of a shared search by Catholic composers for beauty and truth in sacred music. The CD is a must-have—not only for parishioners and visitors past and present—but for all those who love beautiful sacred choral music.
