Enrolment Mass for First Reconciliation

Sunday is the enrolment Mass at 9:00am at the Cathedral and 10:30am at Ravelston for the children of our parish who will begin preparing to receive the sacrament of First Reconciliation in February. Please keep them, their families and their teacher in your prayers!

Final Call to Register for Sacrament of Reconciliation

If you have a child in Primary 3 or above who has not yet made their First Confession, the registration for this remains open until Sunday 20th October. To register your child please visit the Cathedral website on this page and fill in the details. Classes for those who do not attend St Mary’s Primary School begin today, Sunday 6th October at 9:30am at St. Andrew’s, Ravelston, then resume after the school holidays on the 27th October.

Young Adults Group Talks Series on Tuesday: ‘The Language of the Church’

The Young Adults Group will meet again Tuesday, 8th October for our talks on ‘The Language of the Church. Mother Ostrabrama, SSVM will speak on ‘Mary: Virgin & Mother.’ All those between the ages of 18-35 are welcome to the weekly meetings. As usual, we meet at 63 York Place at 7:00pm for teas/coffees and for the talk at 7.30pm, followed by a short group discussion. Each session concludes with Night Prayer and the chance to meet up at a local pub. Come along!

The Society have an upcoming schedule of events to which parishioners 65 years and over are welcome to attend. Ravelston Summer BBQ 2024

Thank you again to everyone who came along on the day and supported – in any way – the annual summer barbecue at Ravelston last month. We have collated all the monies and reimbursed the expenses and can confirm we have the fantastic figure of £1581 to support the running costs of St Andrew’s. Thanks again for your generosity and support. One of the things bought for this year’s event were some wine glasses, which are now stored in the rooms at St Andrew’s for future events. But if you have any private events coming up, they are available for rental by donation.

Doctors’ Opposition to Assisted Suicide

A total of 82% of doctors responding to the Scottish Parliament Health Committee’s detailed call for views on proposals to legalise assisted suicide have stated that they are ‘strongly opposed’ to the plans. 250th Anniversary of St. Patrick's Church, Cowgate

In celebration of the 250th Anniversary of St. Patrick's, Cowgate, the parish will hold a candlelight Rosary procession ending with Benediction at 7:00pm on Saturday, 5 October. This will be followed by a Triduum of devotions beginning Sunday 6 October in honour of St. John Henry Newman, culminating on his feast day Wednesday 9 October, which is the same day as the anniversary of the church. Brothers of the Little Oratory Group for Men

St. Patrick’s, Cowgate EH1 1TQ hosts the Brothers of the Little Oratory in the church house on Mondays after the evening Mass (approximately 6:30pm) for a weekly meeting with simple prayers in common, hymns, short sermons, followed by recreation. New Sunday Missal

Starting on Sunday 1 December, an updated Lectionary will be used in all parishes. This means the readings at Mass will employ a slightly different translation of the Sacred Scriptures (the ESV-CE). Donegal County Council is seeking photographs and memories from Donegal people who worked in Scotland between 1940 and 1990 for an upcoming exhibition. Fabric Matters

Just because it was summer does not mean nothing was done here in Cathedral.  With the role of Complex Manager waiting to be filled, Fr. Robert and Deacon Peter stepped up and handled these duties, most of which dealt with the underbelly of this vast complex.  As mentioned previously, a project team has now been formed, which will be led by Lorcan Mooney, Director of Property for the Archdiocese, with the involvement of Adams Napier Partnership and a number of other external professionals. Work continues on accessing grant funding. The next stage is the development of a scope of works followed by a tendering process.  On a positive note, due to the successful fundraising done to date we are hoping to move forward with the repairs to Sacristy 1 this autumn and we will update you once a definite start of work is confirmed.  Just as a reminder, the Barbara Dickson concert on 3 October is another one of our many fundraising efforts to "Raise the Roof" of our beloved Cathedral.  Thank you to everyone for your continued generosity.  - Darlene

St Andrew’s Needs You!

We are actively looking for new volunteers in St Andrew’s. There are many jobs that help our community continue to function, so there is a job for you! Please do look at the lists which are posted in the church and in the parish rooms and when Fr Robert asks you to help with a certain role please respond generously! St Andrew’s is a small but lively community. It covers all age ranges, but the vast majority of the volunteers have been doing their work for a long time and whilst we are keen and they are able to keep on going, we must support each other to ensure the future of St Andrew’s by doing our fair share. Young Adults Group Talks Series Returns on Tuesday: ‘The Language of the Church’

The Young Adults Group will meet again from Tuesday, 17th September with a new series of talks on ‘The Language of the Church.’ Join us for our first talk by Fr. James Cadman on ‘Give us this day our daily bread.’ All those between the ages of 18-35 are welcome to the weekly meetings. As usual, we meet at 63 York Place at 7:00pm for teas/coffees and for the talk at 7.30pm, followed by a short group discussion. Each session concludes with Night Prayer and the chance to meet up at a local pub. Come along!

Red Mass Next Sunday at Noon

Parish Youth Group

It was great to see so many young people at the return of our parish youth group last week! The group meets on the first Sunday of every month 2.30-4pm. We are actively looking for new volunteers in St Andrew’s. There are many jobs that help our community continue to function, so there is a job for you! Please do look at the lists which are posted in the church and in the parish rooms and when Fr Robert asks you to help with a certain role please respond generously! St Andrew’s is a small but lively community. It covers all age ranges, but the vast majority of the volunteers have been doing their work for a long time and whilst we are keen and they are able to keep on going, we must support each other to ensure the future of St Andrew’s by doing our fair share. Scottish National Youth Pilgrimage, Saturday 21 September

Young adults from ages 18-35 are welcome to attend the Scottish National Youth Pilgrimage on Saturday, 21 September in Glasgow. Archbishop Cushley will join Archbishop Bill Nolan for Holy Mass to conclude the pilgrimage at Glasgow’s St Andrew's Cathedral. For those in our Archdiocese, meet outside the City Chambers in George Square at 12:15pm. If you are travelling from Edinburgh, a group from the Archdiocese will be getting the 11:15am train from Waverley Station to Queen Street. The pilgrimage includes a walking tour through the streets of Glasgow City Centre, recalling the saints that walked them before us! This is a free event. Just bring a packed lunch. ‘Bridge to Freedom’ Recovery Programme in City Centre

Based on the 12 Steps, ‘Bridge to Freedom’ looks at what the Bible has to say about key aspects of our recovery journey, exploring topics such as forgiveness, identity, honesty and trust, and how to deal with emotions like fear, anger and shame. ‘Bridge to Freedom’ comprises a weekly 2-hour group session, with 1-2-1 follow-up support. Anyone who has a willingness to get well and break free from substances is welcome.

Vocations Awareness Week begins today, Sunday, 8 September, and it is a chance for us to pray for those considering the priesthood or religious life, that they may hear God’s call and respond with joyful hearts. Parish Barbecue Thank You

Thank you to everyone that helped to make the annual summer BBQ such a wonderful event last weekend!  It was the biggest crowd at our annual event for some years and it was great to see! Particular thanks go to Caroline, John, Marie and Phil for organising, especially to John for excellent barbecuing and to all our volunteers who worked tirelessly running the stalls, organising/supervising games and helping serve food and drinks — without your help this event would not have been possible.  Thank you to all those who brought salads, cakes and desserts too!  As usual, the BBQ provided the opportunity to meet new and old faces socially, which helps to keep our community thriving. Thank you for coming along and making it a great day. We are still collating final expenses and hope to confirm final figures soon for what was a most successful and enjoyable afternoon!

Mass Intention: Annie (Nancy) McCormack, RIP

The intention of today’s Mass is for the repose of the soul of Annie (Nancy) McCormack, former parish housekeeper at Ravelston, to mark the 50th anniversary of her death this year. Nancy died in St Andrew’s Parish house on 29th of August 1974 aged 59. She was housekeeper to Father James K Birnie for approximately 30 years.  She was very generous to all, a keen photographer and seamstress, loved to travel and was a very good cook. We welcome members of the McCormack family who are with us at Mass today.

‘Bridge to Freedom’ Recovery Programme in City Centre

Based on the 12 Steps, ‘Bridge to Freedom’ looks at what the Bible has to say about key aspects of our recovery journey, exploring topics such as forgiveness, identity, honesty and trust, and how to deal with emotions like fear, anger and shame. ‘Bridge to Freedom’ comprises a weekly 2-hour group session, with 1-2-1 follow-up support. Anyone who has a willingness to get well and break free from substances is welcome.

Comings and goings…

This week the Cathedral sees a number of changes! Gerard Holden, a seminarian from the Scots College in Rome who has been here for the last 6 weeks will be leaving to return to Rome. We are very grateful to him for all he has done in these weeks and promise to keep him in prayer as he continues his preparation for ordination to the priesthood. Also, this week Fr. Ajeesh and I depart for our new assignments, and Fr. Jeremy Milne arrives to begin his new role as Administrator here. I know you will make him very welcome. Finally, also this week, Darlene Newman begins her new role as Complex Manager – a role which she will job-share with Deacon Peter. Darlene and Peter are known to most of you already and I am sure that you will continue to work with them to keep the Cathedral operating and improving.

Bookshop and Cafe Closed 2^nd-6^th September

Children’s Sacramental Preparation: Registration Opens Tomorrow

Registration begins tomorrow, Monday, 2 September, for a new year of catechism classes for children to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation (P3), First Holy Communion (P4) and Confirmation (P7). Young Adults Group Talks Series Returns on 17^th September:

‘The Language of the Church’

The Young Adults Group will meet again from Tuesday, 17th September with a new series of talks on ‘The Language of the Church.’ Join us for our first talk by Fr. James Cadman on ‘Give us this day our daily bread.’ All those between the ages of 18-35 are welcome to the weekly meetings, where we will be learning about Sacred Tradition. As usual, we meet at 63 York Place at 7:00pm for teas/coffees and for the talk at 7.30pm, followed by a short group discussion. Each session concludes with Night Prayer and the chance to meet up at a local pub. Come along and meet old friends and new!

Informal Meeting with Local Community Police Liaison Team

We have arranged an informal meeting with the local community police liaison team scheduled for Saturday, 21 September at 11:00am. The meeting will take place in 63 York Place and is primarily for any volunteers who work in the Cathedral in ministries of passkeeping, cleaning, flower arranging and altar serving. However, if space permits, any other parishioners interested in attending would be welcome. During their visit, the Police will discuss how to keep yourself, your property, and the Cathedral safe; what to do if you feel threatened or intimidated; and best practices for safe working, including working in pairs or within sight of others. Catenians Meeting on 18^th September

Parish Barbecue – Today!

The Parish Barbecue is today, starting at 1.30pm – whatever the weather! Tickets are available after Mass or on the gate - £5 per person or £15 for a family, a bargain! St Andrew’s Talks

Each Wednesday 5.00pm Adoration & Confession

Stop in at St. Andrew’s, Ravelston on Wednesdays and spend some time with Jesus Our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration. Beginning from 5pm, we have Eucharistic Adoration, and a priest is available to hear Confessions, too. This is an opportunity to allow yourself some quiet, peaceful time to pray. Our Lord is waiting for you, so come and meet Him!

Latest on the Parish Rooms Project

As you’ve seen, the rooms are now useable following a power of work from our decorator and parish helpers. Due to other work commitments further progress with painting in the toilets and kitchen has been slightly delayed. We are awaiting the arrival of the new chairs which should be here any day now, but in some progress, and much to our green credentials – we now have hand dryers in the toilets. 

National Pilgrimage to Carfin Grotto Today 

The National Pilgrimage of the Church in Scotland to Carfin Grotto takes place today, Sunday 1 September, with Holy Mass at 3:00pm. The Pope's representative in Great Britain, Archbishop Maury Buendía, will attend, along with the Bishops of Scotland. The event will launch preparations for the Holy Year 2025. 

Justice & Peace Mass Tomorrow

The annual Caritas, Justice & Peace Mass takes place at St Columba’s, 9 Upper Gray Street, Edinburgh, EH9 1SN on Monday 2 September at 7:00pm. It is a chance to worship together and celebrate the work done in parishes on Justice & Peace issues. After Mass there will be a hot food buffet in the church hall and a chance to meet members of the Archdiocesan Caritas, Justice & Peace Commission.

Scottish National Youth Pilgrimage, Saturday 21 September

Young adults from ages 18-35 are welcome to attend the Scottish National Youth Pilgrimage on Saturday, 21 September in Glasgow. Archbishop Cushley will join Archbishop Bill Nolan for Holy Mass to conclude the pilgrimage at Glasgow’s St Andrew's Cathedral.  For those in our Archdiocese, meet outside the City Chambers in George Square at 12:15pm.  If you are travelling from Edinburgh, a group from the Archdiocese will be getting the 11:15am train from Waverley Station to Queen Street, so please join them. The pilgrimage includes a walking tour through the streets of Glasgow City Centre, recalling the saints that walked them before us! This is a free event. Just bring a packed lunch. And finally… 

It seems to have been a very long farewell – but I do finally leave on Thursday 5^th September and my successor, Fr. Jeremy Milne, arrives on Friday 6^th September. Fr. Jeremy is a very fine priest and will be a magnificent Administrator. If you are even half as kind and as welcoming to him as you have been to me – he will be a very happy man! In departing it just remains for me to thank you from my heart for all the friendship and support that you have given me over the last 10 years. It has been an incredible privilege to be part of the history of this great Cathedral – but it has been an even greater privilege to have been your parish priest. Thank you for all your many and manifold kindnesses and please pray for me as I begin this new phase in my life and priestly ministry. Be sure of my ongoing prayers for you all and be sure also of the warmest welcome if you do make it to St. Andrews for a day out in the future.

Farewell to Fr. Patrick

Fr. Patrick has served here at the Cathedral since 2015 and in September he will become the Parish Priest of St James’s, St Andrews, and Chaplain to St Andrews University Catholics. We are very grateful for his presence, his dedicated priestly ministry and his tireless work on behalf of the Cathedral and St. Andrew’s, Ravelston. Please keep him in your prayers as he begins his new ministry. We wish him well! This weekend there will be a second collection for him. Saturday Morning: Mass, Eucharistic Adoration & Confessions

Following 10:00am Mass on Saturday morning, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is held from 10:30am to Noon, concluding with Benediction. Adoration offers us with a time for peaceful prayer and quiet before Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Come for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour…. or more. “There is nothing so great as the Eucharist. If God had something more precious, He would have given it to us.” (St John Vianney) Saturday Confessions are from 10:30am-12:00pm.

Donations for all these stalls can be left at the back of the church before Mass or given to the BBQ reps who will be available to collect in donations after Mass today until 12.30. Latest on the Parish Rooms Project

The main rooms are decorated leaving the radiators to be rehung as a final task. The toilets have new WCs, new radiators and new taps (which close off automatically!) - leaving the electric hand dryers and a new window in the gents to be fitted. The hall, kitchen and toilets should receive fresh paintwork in the next few days. So, while the rooms will not be 100% completed this weekend, the refurbishment is very nearly finished. The final delivery yet to come is the new chairs which will hopefully arrive very soon. Thank you for your forbearance.

‘Diary of a Seminarian’: St. Andrew’s Talk Tomorrow

The new series of St Andrew’s Talks returns tomorrow Monday, 26th August, 6:45pm in the parish rooms. Gerard Holden, a seminarian of the Archdiocese, will talk on the life of a seminarian in Rome. He will reflect on the opportunities that studying in Rome gives a seminarian, the people he’s met from around the world and share some of the spiritual fruits from his time in the Eternal City. Thank you to all those who helped with the organisation and smooth running of the Festival Mass last weekend. We extend our gratitude to so many, from our talented Schola and Music Director, to the teams for flower arranging and cleaning who ensured the Cathedral was in good shape to welcome the special guests and many visitors who are in town during the Festival. A word of thanks also to the passkeepers, the servers and Deacon Peter who were on hand to see to the professional running of this major event during the Festival which serves to showcase the beauty of the Catholic faith, the great tradition of Christian music and the great dignity of the human person with the unalienable right to live in true peace and harmony.

Donations for all these stalls will be received on the 18th and 25th August and can be left at the back of the church. Latest on the Parish Rooms Project

The work has made good progress again this week: the walls of the Rooms are fully decorated, with radiators to be rehung. After several undercoats, the top coat of paint is being applied to the woodwork. The new carpet tiles have been fitted. The focus will shortly move on to the refurbishment of the toilets. As the work continues though, the teas and coffees after Mass on a Sunday will continue their summer break.

St Andrew’s Talks Returns

The new series of St Andrew’s Talks returns next Monday, 26th August, 6:45pm in the parish rooms. Gerard Holden, a seminarian of the Archdiocese, will talk on the life of a seminarian in Rome. He will reflect on the opportunities that studying in Rome gives a seminarian, the people he’s met from around the world and share some of the spiritual fruits from his time in the Eternal City. It is sure to be an interesting talk and you are all welcome! Refreshments available afterwards. Please mark your diary!

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year B

Thursday is the Assumption and is a Holy day of Obligation

This Thursday, 15th August, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is our patronal feast. It is a Holy Day of Obligation meaning all Catholics are obliged to go to Mass on Thursday. Masses in English will be celebrated in the Cathedral at 8am, 10:00am, 12:45pm and 7:30pm, and at St. Andrew’s, Ravelston at 6:00pm.

Farewell to Fr. Ajeesh

Today we say Farewell to Fr. Ajeesh who has been here at the Cathedral for the last two years. In September he will become the Parish Priest of Larbert, and we wish him well as he begins this new stage of his life. Fr. Ajeesh has been a wonderful addition to the Cathedral team, and we are very grateful for his presence, his thoughtful sermons and his tireless work. We will miss him and as a token of our appreciation I will present him with a leaving gift at the 9am Mass today.

Festival Mass on sunday at Noon

To celebrate the opening of Edinburgh International Festival, the 12noon Mass will be our Annual Festival Mass, celebrated by His Grace, Archbishop Leo Cushley. We are delighted to welcome Rev. As the Parish Rooms undergo their transformation, there will be no Sunday teas and coffees this weekend.

Ravelston Parish Rooms Update

The Rooms now have one layer of wallpaper instead of five different types and the first coat of paint on the walls. One of the bay window shutters has been released after a very, very long time. The second shutter will take more time as it is a bit more complex. Wiring for the hand dryers in both toilets is complete. The dryers will be installed after the toilets are decorated.
