  • Ordained Priest: Edinburgh, 3rd April 1965
  • Assistant Priest: Holy Cross, Edinburgh, 1965-66, St. Bride, Cowdenbeath, 1966-71, St. Patrick, Kilsyth, 1972-75, St. Mary, Bathgate, 1975-78
  • Spiritual Director: St. Andrew's College, Drygrange; 1978-80 rector, St. Mary's College Blairs, 1980-85
  • Nominated Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh: 30th May 1985, and ordained by Gordon Gray, Cardinal Priest and Archbishop emeritus at St. Andrews and Edinburgh, at Edinburgh, 5th August 1985 Sovereign Military Order of Malta: Grand Cross conventual chaplain, 1985 founded Gillis College, Edinburgh, 7th September 1986. Gillis College was closed as the Diocesan Seminary and the students transferred to the new National Major Seminary in September 1993.
